BENEFIT FOR JASON YARDE FEAT. JULIAN JOSEPH, SOWETO KINCH, TONY KOFI, DENYS BAPTISTE, ANDREW McCORMACK, JOHN DONALDSON & HEXAGONAL, ESKA MTUNGWAZI, SHANE FORBES, CHANTELLE DUNCAN, SABINA DESIR + MANY, MANY MORE…
This gig was originally intended to feature one of the finest saxophonists in the UK, Jason Yarde. Sadly, however, Jason became ill several weeks ago and will probably be unable to perform again for some months. As a result the gig this evening has now become a benefit for Jason to help raise funds to support him through this difficult time. It is a reflection of the enormous love and admiration throughout the UK scene for this Internationally recognised musician that some of the finest musicians around have offered to appear this evening, including: pianists Julian Joseph, Andrew McCormack, John Donaldson & Jessica Lauren, saxophonists Soweto Kinch, Tony Kofi & Denys Baptiste, singers Eska Mtungwazi, Chantelle Duncan & Sabina Desir and drummer Shane Forbes. But more great musicians are asking to perform on a daily basis, so keep an eye on this page for more details. This is a very worthy cause for one of the most talented, decent and thoughtful of musicians on the UK scene and well worth supporting.
Composer, arranger, producer, MD and saxophonist, Jason Yarde composes across numerous styles (jazz, classical, hip-hop, fusion, R&B, reggae…) and for a variety of media (orchestras, chamber ensembles, big band, dance, film, electro-acoustic…). His originality is such that his Awards include a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, a Paul Hamlyn Award and the inaugural BASCA for Contemporary Jazz for his BBC Proms compositional début. He’s produced award winning albums for Soweto Kinch, Gwilym Simcock and Empirical and as a performer has been a key member of various award-winning groups including Quite Sane and J-Life as well as featuring in the bands of numerous iconic musicians including Sam Rivers, Hermeto Pascoal, McCoy Tyner, Roy Ayers, Andrew Hill and Jack DeJohnette. Ever an innovator this London Jazz Festival performance will certainly be one to watch.
