Duncan Hemstock Quartet
From Adelaide, Australian sax and clarinet player Duncan Hemstock fell in love with jazz and swing music after receiving a Benny Goodman cassette at the age of 13. Having found his path, he performed in local jazz clubs, developing his skills and eventually, becoming a student of renowned Australian clarinet virtuoso and teacher Andy Firth. Subsequently, Duncan joined the much-loved vintage jazz ensemble, the Royal Garden Jazz Band, touring all over Australia. Now based in London, Duncan’s good humour and joyful approach has made him a sought-after player on the scene, most recently seen here at the Club with trumpeter James Davison. But tonight, Duncan takes centre stage with his quartet (Liam Dunachie-piano, Sandy Suchodolski-bass & Steve Brown-drums) as they play tunes made famous by the “resurgent Swing masters in the post-bop era, Lester Young, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster and Arnett Cobb” as well as originals by Duncan himself. A delightful set of mainstream jazz at its finest.
