Mark Kavuma
Over the last ten years trumpeter, composer and educator Mark Kavuma has established an enviable reputation as an influential figure on the UK Jazz scene. With six widely admired albums to his name, including Kavuma (2018, Ubuntu) voted among the best albums of the year by DownBeat magazine plus four on his own Banger Factory Records label, he has established himself as a fluent and creative player whose lyricism and graceful technique are universally admired. However, it is not just as a player that Mark has had such a positive impact. In 2015 he set up the Banger Factory, not just a label but also a collective that acts as a showcase for some of the most gifted jazz talent in the UK and which has been responsible for providing the launch pad for a significant number of young musicians. And if all that wasn’t enough he is also an associate music leader for the Tomorrow’s Warriors programme and a brass tutor and leader at London-based youth music organisation and Carnival band Kinetika Bloco.
The six-piece band he is bringing to the Club tonight is an exciting mix of Award-winning young musicians, including BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year (2020) pianist Deschanel Gordon, alongside the highly regarded saxophonist Mussinghi Brian Edwards. An exciting and uplifting gig! “…exuberant, allowing Kavuma to reaffirm his hard bop credentials while showing his more reflective, soulful side” Guardian; “Kavuma and pianist Deschanel Gordon provide fine solos” UK Jazz News; “…full of joy, soul and swagger” Downbeat
