Mill Hill School Private Event
This event has 2 sittings. Please only book your place for EITHER the Jazz Band perfromance at 12pm OR the Big Band performance at 2pm using the 'comment/notes' section in the booking form to specify which.
Jazz Band : 12pm - 1pm (Arrival from 11:15am ONLY)
Join the Jazz Band for a presentation of everything from big band standards to classic pop hits. In just an hour, you'll be transported from the world of Count Basie's quintessential "Splanky" (Neal Hefti), Glenn Miller's "Pennsylvania 6-500" (Jerry Gray), through real book repertoire all the way to the present day with arrangements of LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem", and The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army". The school is delighted to also welcome some of the finalists from the upcoming Farrow Competition to sing a selected number of songs with live backing.
Big Band : 2pm - 3pm (Arrival from 1:30pm ONLY)
The Big Band will be performing a mix of pieces varying between traditional jazz standards such as Glenn Miller’s ‘In the Mood’ to modern funk styles featuring Stevie Wonder’s ‘Sir Duke’. Other highlights will include ‘Georgia on my Mind’ (Gorrell and Carmichael) and ‘The Chicken’ (Alfred Ellis arr. Mike Story). A selection of singers will perform with the Big Band and there will also be one song from Glee club. Every member of the Big Band will be encouraged to take a solo in one of our pieces, pushing them out of their comfort zone, but allowing them the experience to improvise in a Jazz Club. As this is our Spring Term Concert, this performance will celebrate our Upper Sixth member of the band, Ollie, who will be leaving at the end of the year, in a piece with a specific Tenor Sax feature called ‘Europa’. The pupils work so hard every week to put the pieces together and we are looking forward to seeing their hard work pay off!
