Natalie Duncan
“..spare, restrained arrangements allowing that big soulful voice to roam free”
Guardian
Nottingham-raised singer/songwriter/pianist Natalie Duncan came to wider attention following her appearance on the BBC programme "Goldie's Band By Royal Appointment", the series that was the brainchild of drum and bass pioneer Goldie. Following her appearances on that show she was signed to Decca Records, releasing her first album "Devil in Me", to considerable acclaim, the Guardian declaring "An incandescent star is born". Shortly thereafter she featured on "Later with Jools Holland" and since then she has, amongst many other things, released an electronic EP, "Black & White", and a single titled "Lies" which currently has well over 300,000 listens. Natalie's recording, "Free", released in 2020 on Goldie’s new label Fallen Tree 1Hundred, received a five star review from Echoes Magazine, which called it “...a fine album, probably my favourite of the year so far", while Jazz FM selected two of the album's singles, "Sirens" and "Pools" as Tracks of the Week. Lately however, she's been working with groundbreaking jazz funk outfit Incognito.
For this 606 performance, Natalie will be celebrating some of the greatest singer/songwriter/ pianists of all time, including Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone and more-a mix of her own music, along with some of the great songs that have inspired her as an artist. With her sextet, including Jake Elkan-guitar, Alan Mian-bass, Ricky Mian-sax, Dave Mian-trumpet & Dave Browning-drums.
“She draws comparisons with Nina Simone and Alicia Keys, but has developed her own soulfully compelling style as well as a voice whose honeyed, silky caresses are to die for” MOJO; “a set of genuine, heartfelt and resonating songs” Blues & Soul Magazine
