Ruth Royall
““Lithe-larynxed singer, vaulting between folk, blues and jazz–the last of which....is arguably best. She should be shifting units like Norah or Melua””
Bristol Post
Originally from the South West of England Ruth started singing pretty much as soon as she could talk! As she grew up she lists her early influences as “Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, The Beatles, Chuck Berry…” and by the time she was in her teens was performing with a small jazz trio based in Bristol. Since that time she has toured Germany and Holland as well as working all around the UK. Musically Ruth has expanded her repertoire to include impressive originals as well as classic jazz standards, all of which are well served by her distinctive, jazz influenced “honey toned” voice. She describes her music as " a hybrid of old and new.....holding traces of influences encompassing the early soul sounds of Billie Holiday and Etta James, as well as more recent obsessions such as Submotion Orchestra, Jamie Woon, and Nikka Costa". Really good stuff. She will be appearing tonight with her terrific 5 piece band, featuring Paul Quinn-piano, Harry Stoneham on guitar and Andrew Tween-drums along with Special Guests: Nick Robinson-sax and Sam Woollcott-trombone. This wonderfully talented vocalist clearly has an impressive career before her.
