Sounds of Adderley ft. Tom Smith & Tom Syson
Young heavyweights of the UK jazz scene, alto saxophonist Tom Smith and trumpeter Tom Syson, have joined forces to create ‘Sounds of Adderley’, a new quintet dedicated to the explosive music of Nat and Cannonball Adderley. Twice finalist of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year programme in 2014 and 2016, Tom Smith went on to win the Peter Whittingham Development Award from Help Musicians UK in 2018, a high honour. Since then he’s worked with Grammy Award-winner Maria Schneider, Donny McCaslin (David Bowie) and more. Described as ‘one of the stars of the UK to look out for' by presenter Sarah Ward of Jazz FM, trumpeter, composer and producer Tom Syson has already released two albums, received radio play on BBC Radio 3 and reviews from Jazzwise and UK Vibe. He has performed at high profile events and venues such as the BBC Proms, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall and worked with the likes of the London Jazz Orchestra. Together with their fantastic quintet (Mercury Award-nominee, pianist Fergus McCreadie, bassist Arnie Somogyi and drummer Matt Home), they will feature music from throughout the Adderley’s careers, including “Work Song” and “Jive Samba”. This ensemble is sure to knock your socks off!
“[Tom Smith] …something really special…a player to seek out again” London Jazz; "Syson’s playing is flawless throughout" The Jazzmann; “The album closes with Syson’s simply gorgeous trumpet…bringing to mind the late, great trumpeter Kenny Wheeler” UK Vibe
