SPIKE WELLS’ “SONNYMOON FOR THREE”
“Wells…simply marvellous”
All About Jazz
An icon of the British Jazz scene, Spike Wells is generally recognised as one of the finest modern jazz drummers of his generation. A quiet but imposing figure since the late Sixties, Spike’s tasteful but powerful playing has supported virtually all the major Jazz artists from this country as well as many visiting artists and his association with the late, great, saxophonist Bobby Wellins is now legendary. Although he has never stopped playing, after his ordination as a minister some years ago he became less active on the scene. However, he is now stretching out musically again and tonight will be a great opportunity to hear this remarkable musician in the company of the highly impressive Award-winning young saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan. The music will be in the classic pianoless trio format made famous by the iconic US saxophonist Sonny Rollins, hence the name of the band which is a play on Sonny's classic tune and album "Sonnymoon for Two". The trio will also feature the excellent Eddie Myer on bass and following their highly successful appearance at this year's Love Supreme the music promises to be modern jazz of the highest standard.
