Steve Fishwick/Leon Greening 'Soul Time'
PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT IS ALSO AVAILABLE AS A LIVE STREAM
Growing up on a diet of big band jazz before graduating to the sounds of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, Steve Fishwick is an extraordinary trumpet player who has worked with the biggest names in the jazz scene in the UK and US including Sir John Dankworth, the BBC Big Band, Stan Tracey, Peter King, Anita O' Day (recording with her on her last album 'Indestructible!'), Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath and more. Likewise pianist Leon Greening, known for his hard-swinging style, has been heard with Peter King, Jim Mullen, Clark Tracey, Guy Barker, Matt Wates and of course, Christian Brewer with whom he appeared at the Six for many years. Tonight’s programme explores the music of pianist & composer Bobby Timmons, who made his name in the 1950’s as part of the Jazz Messengers and the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. His compositions “Moanin'”, “Dat Dere” and “This Here” were hits for these two groups and contributed greatly to their success. Joined by Mattyas Hofecker-bass and Matt Home-drums, expect swinging, melodic jazz and funky, down-home grooves. Top-drawer musicianship.
"Steve has his own style. He plays from the bottom to the top of the horn whilst maintaining the integrity of the chords. I can't think of another trumpet player that can do what he does." Wynton Marsalis; “Listening to Leon Greening’s playing is like hearing a history of postbop piano... authentic and yet personal echoes of (all the greats)” Clark Tracey
