Sunday Lunch: Jane Parker
Jane Parker includes work at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Café de Paris and Le Cafconce (Casablanca) on a lengthy and impressive CV. Her renditions of classic standards are quite special, possessing a timeless elegance that is both wistful and sweet and she has several highly regarded albums to her name. In the summer of 2023 she spent some time at the world-famous Rudy Van Gelder studios in New Jersey (USA) working on a recording project with the New York music publisher 2nd Floor Music. The songs included previously unrecorded material by the Argentinian pianist/composer Sergio Mihanovich, plus new vocal versions of instrumental numbers by iconic Blue Note artists saxophonist Dexter Gordon and trumpeters Tommy Turrentine and Lonnie Hillyer, for which she wrote all the lyrics. Today she will be featuring a number of these songs alongside her personal favourites from the jazz and blues songbook supported by her brilliant band featuring Dominic Ashworth-guitar.
“Jane Parker's breathy vocals, reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones…are both sultry and steamy as the bayou itself.” Blueprint Magazine; “Parker is…a kittenish version of Madeleine Peyroux, in love with the glamorous ‘old world‘ pleasures of cocktails, vampy femme fatales…well aren’t we all?” Jazzwise
